Understanding support

Understanding your smoking habit

Stopping smoking is not only about willpower. Cravings, routines, stress, and certain situations can all make quitting harder, which is why the first consultation looks at what smoking currently does for you.

Nicotine cravings

Why this can feel hard

Urges can feel strongest at certain times of day or when you are tired, stressed, or used to smoking regularly.

How support may help

We can help you plan for difficult moments and talk through suitable ways to handle cravings where appropriate.

Habit and routine

Why this can feel hard

Smoking can become part of daily routines such as breaks, travel, meals, or winding down at the end of the day.

How support may help

We can help you spot routine-based smoking patterns and agree practical swaps that make your quit plan easier to follow.

Triggers and motivation

Why this can feel hard

Stress, certain activities, and social situations can all affect when you want to smoke and how confident you feel about quitting.

How support may help

We can help you build motivation around your own reasons for quitting and prepare for moments that might otherwise set you back.

Your next steps

Together we build a plan that feels practical, not overwhelming. That may include ways to manage cravings, routines, triggers, and the next steps that feel realistic for you.

Suitable options

Treatment options we can discuss

If treatment support may help, the pharmacy team can talk through suitable options in a clear and practical way.

Nicotine replacement therapy

Nicotine replacement therapy, often called NRT, gives your body a controlled amount of nicotine without tobacco smoke. It can help reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms while you work towards stopping smoking.

Patches, gum, lozenges, inhalators, mouth sprays, and nasal sprays may be discussed where suitable.

Combining support options

Some people use a steady option such as a patch alongside a faster-acting option for sudden cravings. The most suitable approach depends on your smoking pattern, preferences, and health background.

Vaping as a quit aid

For some adults who smoke, vaping may be discussed as a way to help stop smoking. It is generally considered less harmful than smoking, but it is not risk-free and is not suitable for children or people who do not smoke.

Choosing what is right for you

Your age, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, medical conditions, current medicines, and previous quit attempts can all affect what may be suitable. The pharmacy team can help you agree a safe next step.

If you have tried to quit before, that is still useful information. Many people need more than one attempt before they find a plan that feels right for them.

Questions

Stop Smoking Clinic FAQs

Is the Stop Smoking Clinic free?

The service is free if you do not pay for prescriptions. If you do pay for prescriptions, it is just one prescription charge for 12 weeks of support and NRT therapy.

Can I have the consultation by telephone or Zoom?

Yes, telephone or Zoom support may be available. We can confirm the most suitable consultation format when you contact Five Ways Pharmacy.

Do I need to be ready to quit before I book?

No. You do not need a perfect plan before booking. The consultation is there to help you talk through your habits, your goals, and what kind of support might suit you.

What happens in the first consultation?

We ask about how much you smoke, what tends to trigger cravings, any previous quit attempts, and what support you would find most helpful. We then agree practical next steps together.

Will I be offered stop-smoking products?

Suitable options such as Nicotine Replacement Therapy and vapes can be discussed where appropriate and available, but the same approach will not be right for everyone.

What if I have tried to quit before?

That is completely fine. The service is non-judgemental, and previous quit attempts can help the team understand what may work better for you this time.

Is support guaranteed to work?

No service can guarantee quit outcomes. Support can help you build a stronger plan and feel more prepared, but results vary from person to person. What we can say is that the statistics show you are three times more likely to quit with our help.
